Wisdom Teeth Removal Pre-Op Instructions: A Complete Guide from Apple Tree Dental

August 19, 2025

Getting your wisdom teeth removed is a big deal. And it’s not just something you stroll into. Wisdom teeth removal requires planning and preparation, from stocking up on soft foods to fasting before the procedure. There are a few things you should consider before your procedure.

At Apple Tree Dental in Rexburg, our goal is to make your oral surgery experience as smooth and stress-free as possible, but that doesn’t begin and end with us; there are a few things you can do to prepare.

Whether you’re a college student looking to remove your wisdom teeth or a parent helping your teen prepare for the surgery, here are a few things to remember before walking into your appointment.

Why Pre-Op Instructions Matter

Wisdom teeth removal is one of the most common oral surgeries, and following the pre-op instructions is crucial in enjoying a safe and successful procedure. Complete preparation reduces the risk of complications during and after the surgery. It also paves the way for a quick recovery and makes the overall experience more comfortable.

General Pre-Op Oral Surgery Instructions

Here’s what you should do in the 24–48 hours leading up to your oral surgery:

Fasting Before Surgery

If your surgery involves sedation or general anesthesia, you should not eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours beforehand. This includes water.

If you fail to follow this instruction, you may need to reschedule your surgery.

Arrange Transportation

Sedation makes it unsafe for you to drive. Be sure to have a responsible adult available to take you to and from your appointment.

Medications

Let us know about any medications you’re currently taking. We’ll advise you on whether to take them as usual or pause them before surgery. If you’ve been prescribed antibiotics or other medications prior to the procedure, be sure to take them as instructed.

What to Wear

Wear loose, comfortable clothing with short sleeves, especially if IV sedation is planned. Avoid wearing contact lenses, heavy makeup, jewelry, or nail polish.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Pre-Surgery Instructions

In addition to the general steps above, here are some specific wisdom teeth removal pre-surgery instructions to follow:

What to Expect on the Day of Surgery

Getting your wisdom teeth removed can be stressful. Here’s what you can expect: When you arrive at Apple Tree Dental, our experienced Rexburg oral surgery team will review your medical history, answer any last-minute questions, and make sure you're comfortable. We’ll go over all oral instructions for aftercare before the procedure so your recovery starts on the right foot.

Anesthesia and Sedation Options

Understanding your anesthesia and sedation options is incredibly important. At our office, we offer several choices to ensure that your procedure is both comfortable and safe. Depending on your medical history, the complexity of the surgery, and your preferences, our doctor will recommend the best option for you.

For most wisdom teeth removal procedures, you will receive local anesthesia to numb the area, conscious sedation to help you relax, or general anesthesia if a deeper level of comfort is needed. Local anesthesia keeps you awake but pain-free, and conscious sedation allows you to remain calm and comfortable throughout the surgery. General anesthesia is used for more complex cases and will ensure you are completely asleep during the procedure.

To ensure a smooth anesthesia experience, it’s essential to follow all pre-operative instructions carefully. This includes not eating or drinking for a specified number of hours before your surgery appointment, and letting your doctor know about any routine oral medications, blood thinners, or over-the-counter pain medication you are taking.

After your wisdom teeth removal, follow all post-operative instructions closely. Rest in a comfortable area, eat only soft foods like mashed potatoes, and use ice packs to reduce swelling. Take any prescribed medication or counter pain medication as directed, and avoid smoking or drinking through a straw to prevent complications. Some patients may experience mild bowel upset or nausea, which usually resolves with rest and proper care.

If you have any questions about your anesthesia options, pre-operative instructions, or what to expect during recovery, our team is here to help. We want your wisdom teeth surgery to be as safe and comfortable as possible, so don’t hesitate to contact us with any concerns before or after your procedure.
